First Annual SportsChump March Madness Bracket Bonanza

College basketball junkies and gambling degenerates alike, welcome to Sportschump.net’s first ever March Madness Bracket Bonanza.

The next three weeks will ring in the most entertaining time of the year for sports fans: the NCAA Tournament, where anyone can be a hero, including you!  That’s assuming you can master the madness.

This site’s contest will be held a tad differently than most.  It will require a honed eye, a keen knowledge of the college basketball season… and as usual, a little luck.

NO points will be awarded for the winners of the Thursday/Friday matchups!!!  However, if any of your Sweet Sixteen teams fail to make it through the first weekend, YOU CANNOT EARN POINTS WITH THEM IN LATER ROUNDS.  There are no re-buys, ladies and gentlemen.

List ONLY your sweet sixteen teams in the comments below.  After the first two rounds, you will then be asked to pick the winners of later rounds based upon which teams you have remaining.

Your Sweet Sixteen selections must be in by Thursday noon!!!  Bookmark this page for regular scoring updates and to select which of your remaining teams will advance.  Be sure to return after the first weekend to make the rest of your picks.

The scoring is as follows:

Three points will be awarded for each correct Sweet 16 team for a 48 maximum possible points in the first round.  Five points will be awarded for each Elite 8 team you select, seven points for each Final 4 team, nine for each team you select in the final game and eleven points for picking the national champion from the get-go.

To the victor go the spoils, your name in the SportsChump Hall of Fame and a fashionable SportsChump t-shirt to call your own.

Sportsfans…. LET THE MADNESS BEGIN!!!

The picks are in, gentlemen, and the madness has officially begun!  We shall hereby call ourselves the Thirsty Thirteen.  Thirsty for winners, thirsty for whiskey and thirsty to be called King Chump for a Day.

As you can see, it’s been a little bloody so far.  Please review your entries for accuracy.

Here’s a few things I’ve noticed about the picks so far…

ROUGH OPENING DAY: Before sundown, Mr. Feller already had three of his Sweet 16 picks eliminated.  With the rash of Thursday upsets, most of us weren’t far behind.  At least we’ll have something to talk about on our radio show.  Only Liar North has 15 of 16 remaining.  His daughter must have made his picks for him.

BRAINFART OF THE WEEK PICK: Mr. Seay picked both Temple and Wisconsin to advance to the Sweet 16.  Only problem is those two schools are both in the same bracket, making such an event impossible.  I’ll refrain from telling you he’s a University of Tennessee graduate but hey, at least his alma mater is still in the tournament.

BOLD PICKS THAT MAY OR NOT PAN OUT: Brotha E was the only one of us to select Georgia Tech to reach the Sweet 16.  Feller was the only one to pick Clemson.  Heavy D was the only one to pick Louisville to beat Duke.  Puckett was the only man to pick Texas over Kentucky (whoops!)  I was the only one to pick St Mary’s over Villanova.  Good luck to all.  We’ll see how this plays out in later rounds.

HOMER PICKS: Four of us chose Florida with the hope they could return one step closer to championship form.  The remaining nine chose Kansas State, realizing that teams who play inconsistent defense and who don’t value every possession are doomed to fail, especially in March.  How soon until Austin Rivers enrolls?

First off, much props to the frequently seen and always keen, gas-facin’, Zima-drinkin’, Buckeye-lovin’ Pedro_Nice who nailed a spectacular ten out of the Sweet Sixteen.  With all the upsets in this year’s tournament, such prognostication is to be commended. Take a bow, Pete.  And as we have one Ohio State grad (Pete_Nice) and one Tennessee grad (Austin Seay) participating in this year’s contest, things should get pretty heated as their two schools square off against one another in the very next round.  Let the trash talking begin.

Gentlemen, read carefully because here are the rules for the following rounds.

You can ONLY USE THE TEAMS YOU HAVE REMAINING to choose your winners from here on out.  In the comments section below, I need you to fill out the entire rest of your brackets.  Pick your winners for the Elite Eight, Final Four, championship game and national champion and please do so in intelligible format.

List accordingly

Elite 8: Teams A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H

Final Four: Teams A, B, C, D

Championship Game: Teams A, B

National Champion: Team A

Again… if any of your teams have been eliminated into the round of 8, you CAN NOT gain points for that round.  If you can’t pick 8 teams for this round, so be it.  Just list your possible winners.  For example, I selected neither Xavier nor Kansas State to advance in the bottom half of the West bracket, so I cannot gain points for that particular game.  But as I still have St Mary’s alive and not Baylor, I will obviously choose St Mary’s and hope they win to gain five points in that particular matchup.

INCOMPLETE ENTRIES WILL NOT GARNER POINTS FOR THAT ROUND.  Go easy on me, guys.

Please ensure that I have correctly tabulated your total points and remaining teams.  If not, let me know.

To review the scoring, five points will be awarded for each team properly selected into the Elite Eight, seven points for each Final Four team selected, nine for each team you predict into the final game and eleven for correctly picking the national champion.

I need your picks for the rest of the tournament by no later than 7:00 pm Thursday.

The t-shirt orders have been placed so have at it, gentlemen.  Might even order me some scarlet and gray for my boy, Pete_Nice if he can seal the deal.  Oh…. and if I win, you all will never hear the end of it.

  1. If for some reason, any of you would like to keep your picks secret until Thursday noon, you can e-mail them to me at chump@sportschump.net instead of posting them here.

However, if you actually think that any of the entrants are going to look at your picks, think they’re winners and change their picks according to yours, you might want to seek psychological help.

  2. 1)Kansas, 4)Maryland, 3)Georgetown, 2)Ohio State

  3. Ladies and gentleman… THE FIRST PICKS ARE IN!

    Nice work, Fritchie.

Be sure to check back to this page either during or after the weekend. Depending on how many entries we get, I’ll have standings and updates posted.

  5. My future radio partner has submitted his picks. Not much of a surprise to find Florida in his Sweet 16.

He asked his Chandler Parsons Fathead if he liked their chances and it said yes so he went orange and blue.

How was the Tennessee trip, bra? Did you stay for the final game?

And where were ya’ for the Billy B. conference call?

  6. Chris

For me the joy is watching the games and seeing the minnows try to take down the titans of the game.

Dropped my own bracketology piece as well as a piece on the montrosity that Bob Arum considered a success with Pacquiao and Clottey. What a joke that fight was. Clottey just stood there under a constant barrage of punches and Manny couldn’t even knock him out.

  8. Be right over to check out your latest, Al.

I think everyone would agree. It’s a special time of year where basically everything else in the sports world takes a back seat.

  9. Hmmm…. Vols #1.

That could mean only one of two things. Either Bruce Pearl has entered my bracket contest or the Mayor of L.C. is in the building.

I think it’s probably the latter.

Just be careful, Mr. C. The last time someone wore one of these SportsChump t-shirts around you, he took all your money.

    I even have proof.

    http://sportschump.net/t-shirts-coming-soon/

  10. Interesting seedings this year.. Any case, Florida isn’t in the South Region so I just sold my Sweet 16 tickets and made a nice little profit. I’ll work on those seedings because anyone who’s anyone wants to rock a SportsChump.net t-shirt.

Was really hoping for a UF/Butler matchup in the first round. Nice…

  11. Donny… I’ll be sure to order some XXXL’s in the slim chance you happen to win.

Are you sure your ribs could handle another Florida-Butler first round match-up?

  12. Chris

I’ve been residing in the US now for close to 18 years. And as far as I’m concerned the three biggest sporting events on the calendar are in no high order of preference or importance. The Superbowl, World Series and NCAA men’s basketball tournament. But for me the one that brings the most delight is the NCAA tourney !

    Alan Parkins

  13. Chris

So the Broncos’ Josh McDaniels believes that acquiring Brady Quinn immediately makes the team better ? Oh my God were does that now leave Chris Simms ? Out on an island I expect ?

  14. I know next to nothing about this, but it looks like fun, so here it goes.

Texas, Wisconsin, New Mex, West Virginia

    Duke, Siena, Baylor, Villanova

  16. Al, I don’t see Quinn as anything but a backup to Orton in Denver.

He’ll compete for the starting job but I don’t see him getting it.

I still want to see how Holmgren is going to reconstruct Cleveland. Is Delhomme a done deal or what? He might be a good band-aid until they can find their QB of the future.

  17. OK, I’m in:

    Villanova

    Good luck to all!

    Drew (a.k.a. Pacman J)

  18. Al… they can clamor all they want. They gave up Jay Cutler for Orton. Quinn’s gonna have to wait his turn or at least prove he’s better.

I don’t see that happening too soon.

  19. Chumpeteer Numero Uno’s official picks:

How dare you knock Brady Quinn ! LOL,LOL,LOL !!! If he says he’s ready then he’s ready. Whether or not it’s actually playing football . Well, that’s another thing entirely .

I love the Education Secy’s proposal that the criteria that should be met for the NCAA tourney should be based on graduation rates. Apparently Calipari got scared and started to make a run for the hills .

    Alan Parkins

  22. Chris, love your site, but I’m not even gonna watch the NCAA Tournament. Too many teams in there, should be on 36 teams, until it get’s down to that, I won’t watch it. Take this from a guy that knows lots about Hoops, trust me.

  25. Al… not sure if you caught PTI yesterday but they had an interesting rebuttal to suspending programs with under 40% graduation rates from the tourney.

  26. I think with a quality mind on the bench, Minnesota could be solid in another couple of years.

And it’s certainly nice to see Corey Brewer dunking on everybody.

  27. Chris

How strange is the story coming out about the Texas Rangers’ manager Ron Washington and his being tested and found positive for cocaine use ? It was known to the hierarchy of MLB and the Rangers front office since July of ’09. But it’s only now that we’re being made aware of it all. I think that something else went on beyond the initial findings concerning Washington which has led to his alleged resignation. There are rumors that he was back using and it led to a showdown between Washington , Nolan Ryan , team President & co-owner, GM Jon Daniels .

Here’s my take on it all.

    Nice work fellas.

Keep checking back here as I’ll update scoring and standing as regularly as possible.

  34. Fritchylicious…

It’s not nice to kick a man while he’s down.

We’ll have fully updated brackets and point totals Monday.

    Await further instructions, all.

  35. But for those of you who can’t wait until then…

    Through Saturday’s games

    Pacman: 6 (KSU, UK)

    More to come.

  36. Fear not…I will prevail. All I have to do is figure out the controls on this hot tub time machine and I am so winning this thing.

  37. Yazoo… I don’t know much about Baylor this season but they better not sleep on the Great White Gaels. They hustle more than you on the poker table.

I think it would help Baylor that their next two games are in Houston.

  38. Everyone wins on Syracuse proving we all know a lot about hoops.

Today’s big games for our bracket:

Michigan State vs Maryland (6 people have Maryland, 6 have Michigan State)

Xavier vs Pitt (4 people have Xavier, 8 have Pitt)

A&M vs Purdue (6 people have A&M, 5 have Purdue)

Feller’s rooting for West Virginia to lose as he has Clemson

Jewell’s rooting for Ohio State to lose as he has Georgia Tech

Collins is rooting for Duke to lose as he has Louisville.

  39. Gentlemen…. Pete_Nice (30 points) is currently leading the tournament with 10 of 16 teams remaining. Kid’s like Evan Turner.

Updates and further instructions will be posted Monday.

With your next comments, I will need your remaining winners through the rest of the tournament with ONLY THE TEAMS YOU HAVE ALIVE.

  40. Ohio State, (x), ‘Cuse, (x), Baylor, Duke, WV, KY

  42. Austin’s picks are in but we have minor problem, Mr. C.

In the Elite 8, you cannot choose both Duke and Purdue as they play each other Friday night. One team must lose, kind of like when UT plays UF in football.

I’m assuming you like Duke in that match-up as you have them in the Final Game losing to your beloved Volunteers.

If your Vols win it all, I will drive my ass up to the L.C., deliver the SportsChump t-shirt personally and we will be festive til morning.

    Best of luck, my friend.

  43. Fewest number of points wins, right? I am so awesome.

OK, not like it matters anymore but here goes:

Cuse, K-State, Ohio State, Duke, W. Virginia, Kentucky

    K-State, Ohio State, Duke, Kentucky

    K-State & Kentucky

    K-State (probably my only chance)

p.s. Hey Chump, what is the prize for last place?

  44. Very interesting picks, Pacman.

Remember, it ain’t over until the portly lady sings.

Nice job choosing Kansas State although now that your picks have been made public, some other contestant might thwart your efforts and choose them just to obtain that elusive sportschump T.

PACMAN’S PICKS ARE IN AND VERIFIED!

Three are in, ten to go.

  45. Oh this is so confusing…people who drink copius amounts of bourbon should not operate web-sites! Or maybe those who drink copius amounts of bourbon should not try to make picks…whatever, here goes:

    Midwest
    OSU (MSU loses to N.Iowa)

    West
    Syracuse & K-State

    East
Kentucky (they beat Cornell and WVU)

    South
    Duke & Baylor

So, my Final 4= OSU, Kentucky, K-state & Duke

With a title match between OSU & Kentucky

National Champion: Kentucky (but I hope I’m wrong). If OSU wins the title you better send me a t-shirt anyway bud.

    Pete_Nice, esq.

  46. Alright, Petey.

We won’t hold your OSU degree against you.

The point is, since you still have Michigan State alive, you should probably select them to BEAT N. Iowa. As you selected Kansas and don’t have N. Iowa alive in your pool, you can still get points for an Izzo win but not Northern Iowa.

The rest of your picks are in and verified.

Would you care to rescind your N. Iowa pick over Mich St just for safe measure?

Either way, pour me a drink.

SportsChump’s official picks will be in shortly. I know that’s what E’s waiting on since everything he knows about basketball, he learned from me.

  54. Ladies and gentlemen, what you’ve all been waiting for….

    My picks.

Remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can’t stick your friends under the couch.

    Syracuse

    UK

    WV

    Duke

These are the teams that I have left

  60. Come on Buckeyes! I really thought they would get schooled by big, bad Georgetown, but the Mighty OU Bobcats (best spring party scene btw)has cleared the path for Evan Almighty & Co. This ain’t football, so we will welcome an SEC match-up fo sho. In fact, other than Kentucky, give me a weak-ass SEC squad over a mid-pack MAC team anyday!

BTW, I am not picking MSU to advance, so that is why I listed N.Iowa…I think you figured that one out, but I know it’s Mad Dog coupon day at the plasma clinic so I wanted to clarify.

    Go Bucks!!!

  61. Fritch’s picks were in and verified via text message and I was unable to get them posted on time.

    Here are his picks…

Elite 8: Ohio State, Kansas State, UK, WV, Duke, Baylor

Final 4: OSU, KSU, WV, Duke

In the final game, he has West Virginia beating Kansas State.

  62. Brotha E’s picks were in under the wire…

Final 8: Kansas State, Syracuse, UK, West Virginia, Duke

    Final 4: Cuse, UK, Duke

    Final game: Cuse beating Duke.

    E… thanks for playing.

  63. Nice win, Mr. C, although a saw rise in the Columbus, OH suicide rate accompanies your happiness.

You guys have a great basketball coach.

Standings will be updated shortly. Sorry for the delay, fellas.

  64. Here goes…. Standings through Saturday’s Elite 8:

    Seay – 57
    Nice – 55
    Fritch – 49
    Yaz – 49
    Aero – 47
    Sprague – 47
    Collins – 44
    Chump – 44
    Feller – 41
    Nelly – 41
    Jewell – 41
    Pacman – 38
    Puckett – 36

    Ladies and gentlemen, nobody panic.

We have a Tennessee Volunteer winning the pool.

  65. Congrats to the VOLS, nice win. Sparty should not be a problem for them today. I thought GU would beat OSU with their size if they played, instead it was UT and the Fabulous Mr. Chism (not what I called him during the game). In fact I was cracking hard on that stupid headband, and then he takes it off and goes off for 18 in the 2nd half. The UT D shut down Deibler and that was the difference…

I am out, but i have West Virginia in my office pool, so maybe i will just buy my own Sports Chump T when I win the $$$. UT v. WVU title game would be sweet!

  66. I told ya kty would lose to W. Virg.!!! They now can rest b4 they take out Duke

  67. Mr. C spoke to early although it was a valiant effort.

Pete_Nice representing Buckeye Nation as classy as always. Just need a little depth there, brother.

Fritchie nailed that West Virginia pick and might just look pretty stylish driving around Gainesville wearing his new SportsChump.net t-shirt.

We shall see. Fat lady hasn’t sung yet.

  68. Standings as of Sunday night…

Fritch – 63 (Has West Virginia wining NC)
Seay – 64 (Has Duke losing NC to UT)
Nice – 62 (No more points possible)
Aero – 61 (No more points possible)
Yaz – 56 (Has Duke winning NC)
Sprague – 54 (No more points possible)
Chump – 51 (No more points possible)
Jewell – 48 (Has Duke losing in NC game)
Nelly – 48 (No more points possible)
Feller – 48 (No more points possible)
Pacman – 45 (No more points possible)
Collins – 44 (No more points possible)
Puckett – 43 (Has West Virginia winning NC)

  69. Should have stuck with WVU in this pool too…DAMNIT!! I would look good in that T…it’s a half-shirt, yes?

Hoping ET’s girlfriend can talk him into spurning millions for one more year in school. Monster recruiting class (check out Sullinger and Thomas Wed. night in McD’s game)coming in for better paint presence…could take it all next year Evan…???

  70. I was gonna save you the mesh muscle shirt, Petey. Brought to you by Zima. I figured that’d be more your style.

It’s gonna be tough for Evan to pass up a shot at the number two draft pick, Pete. Although Joakim did it and things worked out pretty good for him.

  71. Well, my boys played hard (though they could use more pracrice on freefrows)..So why is noone thinking that Mich St or Butler can win NC??

  72. Mr C…

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to watch the game as I was tending bar at a local Italian Festival Sunday but it looked like a heartbreaker.

Pearl’s one helluva coach. Considering what you guys went through this year, they did pretty damn good.

And you pissed off a lot of Buckeyes in the process.

  73. Coach K, one more W if you please. :)Fritch, no soup (or shirt) 4u. Too bad about Butler blowing up his knee, though. Classy guy, great player, deserved better.

  74. Final Standings….

    Yaz – 76
    Austin – 73
    Fritch – 63
    Pete_Nice – 62
    Aero – 61
    Brotha E – 57
    Liar North – 54
    SportsChump – 51
    Partykiller – 48
    UFHoops – 48
    Pacman – 45
    Heavy D – 44
    Zbignu – 43

Congrats to Yaz, a solid SportsChump supporter and all around good guy. He is after all, the most interesting man in the world.

Yazoo, t-shirts are still on the presses but I’ll be traveling up to Gville soon and will deliver first hand.

  75. Thanks, Chris. I’ll be sure to wear that shirt to Bro. Bills. This was an interesting format, hope you do it again in ’11. Perhaps there will be a more dominant team then. Duke was useful for me, but they still SUCK! Stay thirsty my friends.
