Kevin Harlan + Super Bowl streaker = best play-by-play call ever

Just when you thought I was done firing Super Bowl posts into cyberspace, I reel you right back in.

There are great sports calls and then there are great sports calls, the calls you remember, the calls that have become a part of our daily vernacular, the perfect intonation, the perfect verbiage all lined up with the perfect sports moment.  They stay with us forever.

“Down goes Frazier,” “Havlicek stole the ball,” “Do you believe in miracles,” “a specTACULAR move by Michael Jordan” and “I don’t believe what I just saw” remind us not only of vivid moments in sports history but transport us back to a time when we recall just where we were, what we were doing and how memorable of a moment it was, even more so thanks to the broadcaster’s spoken word, the icing on the proverbial cake.

We now have a new one, thanks to the great Kevin Harlan and a guy in a pink leotard.

We’re slowly getting closer to normal (hopefully) and by normal, that means we’re back to having sporting events with streakers more scantily clad than Tom Brady’s wife at a 1990s Victoria’s Secret photo shoot.

Smack dab in the middle of Super Bowl LV, a game that would be gloriously won by your Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we were reminded of a simpler time when crazed fans would throw caution into the wind, strip off their clothes and interrupt the game only hours before seeing his own mugshot on a police blotter.

One good thing about not having fans in the stands means there are no more streakers.  One bad thing about no fans in the stands is that… there are no more streakers.

I’m sure there’s a strategy to streaking.  I can’t say I’m an expert on the matter but I’m sure the pre-game ritual involves shot-gunning beer after beer to build up the courage, figuring out exactly what to wear – and then take off – so that 65,000 fans, and millions more on TV, have eyeshot of your junk.

The streaker’s run was one thing.  Accentuating the streaker’s run… was Kevin Harlan.

Those familiar with his work know Harlan is one of the best play-by-play men in the business but if you weren’t already convinced, he cemented his legacy on Super Bowl Sunday.

On a night where Tom Brady convinced every one watching he was in fact the GOAT, Harlan did the same from the broadcast booth which watching a half-clothed, half-crazed man gain more yards than the Kansas City Chiefs.

Not much more to say here other than thank you, Mr. Harlan.  Turn up your volume, ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the call… and pull up those pants, my man!

  1. Oh, yes, they call him the Streak
    (Boogity, boogity)
    Fastest thing on two feet
    (Boogity, boogity)
He’s just as proud as he can be
    Of his anatomy
He goin’ give us a peek
Oh, yes, they call him the Streak
    (Boogity, boogity)
He likes to show off his physique
    (Boogity, boogity)
If there’s an audience to be found
    He’ll be streakin’ around
    Invitin’ public critique

  2. I came to know the joy that is Kevin Harlan 30-some years a go when he was the original voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The poor guy had to make every night’s 30-point loss sound interesting. In other words, he’s been making dick jokes for years…

  3. I got arrested for streaking when I was in high school. The case was dismissed due to lack of evidence.:)
