Weekly Caption Contest pokes fun at Mark Richt and the 1-2 Georgia Bulldogs

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

If you opened a newspaper today and looked at the SEC East standings, you’d find an unusual site: Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs at the very bottom.  Under Kentucky.  Under Vanderbilt.  Under South Carolina against whom they could only muster six points.  To give you an idea how bad things have gotten for Georgia, Las Vegas has them at pick ‘em this week at Mississippi State.

As a Florida grad, I probably shouldn’t be writing this considering we haven’t been all that impressive either and we still have a game against them in late October but GOODNESS!  Georgia absolutely stinks.

The Bulldogs started the season ranked just outside the Top 20 as they generally do, but in the past two weeks they rushed out of the AP rankings like they were charging a cover.  It wasn’t all that long ago that this team finished the season ranked second in the nation but Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are long gone.

In this week’s caption contest, Georgia fans can reminisce about a fonder time, in 2007, when Mark Richt, whose seat is getting hotter by the week, defeated their arch-rival Florida Gators.  To this day, it remains Urban Meyer’s only loss against the Gators’ top three rivals (Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee).

Have at it football fans, and before you starting feeling bad for Coach Richt, keep in mind he’s making three million dollars this year.

  1. So they’re running me out of Athens by sliming me. I can still get a job at Miami or Clemson. They appreciate a guy that can incite a decent riot.

  2. Hey Chump,

I just heard our favorite song on the radio out here in SD…only now it’s “FORGET You”

    Whatever it takes, I guess…

    Drew

  3. Aer….

It’s safe to say Urb had the last laugh when he called those final two time outs in the waning seconds of a 49-10 beat down.

Keep in mind, we’ve beaten them 17 out of the last 20 times so I guess a Powerade bath is in order when it finally happens.

  4. Drew…

I finally got the DJ at my club to play it. And I assumed they weren’t going to put that on the radio as is.

But they’ll put Rush Limbaugh on which is infinitely more offensive.

And whatever happened to Dr. Laura? Is she still off the air?

  5. Not Hardly Chris…

My heart is out west with the PAC 10… I’m so sick of the Big Ten… I did a post a few months back on Fox about where all the TV college sports talking heads come from. Did you know that in college football around 90% of the people on ESPN and the game announcers/color people have ties to the Big Ten? When it comes to hype the Big Ten isn’t just the NCAA Champion, they’re the WORLD Champion! No wonder they worm their way into the poll driven big bowl games and then get blasted! Then they make excuses about having to play in a warm weather site, blah blah blah… Poor babies! LOL

I’ve got a real problem with schools that play 2/3rds of their games at home, schedule push-over non-conference schools, breeze through a lightweight conference and then profess how great they are… That’s the Ohio State formula for success with the talking heads pushing their agenda…

    Enough said?

    I’d like to see more SEC-PAC 10 matchups…

  6. Chris

Bulldogs won’t be doin’ anything at all within the SEC .

“Guys I’ll see you in the showers after wards and then we can play hide the bar of soap” .

    tophatal 🙂

  7. Well, Bob, there’s no denying the importance of football in the midwest. Many of the great coaching minds come from there, including our own Urban Meyer. I don’t resent them for having such rich tradition (although you’re right, they do get a bit big-headed about it at times).

I’m not OSU apologist but keep in mind, they have scheduled Miami and USC in recent years. I don’t know that you’ll see the top tier SEC teams schedule top-tier Pac-10 teams, although you will get that rare LSU-Arizona match-up every so often.

If Bama and OSU both run the table this year, who will have had more impressive wins?

  8. Al…

For Georgia to not finish either first, second or third in the SEC East is unacceptable.

I know the Gators make it hard on everyone else, but second place should be attainable. I know the Ol Ball Coach has a solid squad and I know Georgia’s starting a redshirt freshman QB (Why?) but Georgia faithful have higher expectations.

Richt shouldn’t think for one second that they won’t be tired of playing second fiddle…. or worse.

  9. Okay, gang.

I’m disappointed in everyone’s effort. Isn’t it college football season?

    How about….

Seen here, Georgia football players try to awaken Coach Richt who clearly has forgotten how to win.

    or

Oh, I’m sorry, did I break your concentration?

    or

Seen here, Mark Richt takes the most famous shower in Athens since Michael Stipe showered back in 2002.

    COME ON, PEOPLE!!!

  10. Chris

There’s a reason why the SEC is so competitive from top to bottom . No other conference within collegiate football can match that at all.

We can all opine as to who has a right as to who ought to win but at the end of the day if you don’t leave it out on the field then you don’t deserve any plaudits.

Alabama vs Arkansas ought to be a great game .

Richardson , McElroy and Ingram on one side . And on the other Ryan Mallett and his boys .

    tophatal 🙂

  11. I’d go ahead and lay the seven points in that Alabama game, Al.

I’m not buying the hype on Mallett just yet. It’ll take more than just a big arm to beat the Tide.

  12. Dear Mark Richt,
NO MORE MR. NICE GUY. GET WITH IT OR SELL YOUR HOUSE. WE LOVE YOU BUT ONLY SO MUCH. DO SOMETHING WITH THE TALENT THAT YOU HAVE ON THE FIELD. HOW MANY 1ST ROUND DRAFT CHOICES HAVE YOU HAD THAT YOU AND YOUR COACHING STAFF COULD DO NOTHING WITH? IT’S A SAD DAY WHEN YOU NEED A PROBATION OFFICER ON YOUR COACHING STAFF AND YOU ARE 0-3 IN SEC. IT MAKES ME WANT TO THROW UP WHEN I KNOW U R DOING NO BETTER THAN GOFF AND DONNAN. I WAS THERE WHEN AUBURN WAS BEATING US 35-0 AT HALF TIME IN THE DONNAN DAYS. DEFENSE IS PLAYING TIME ZONE. WE ARE IN THE SAME TIME ZONE AS RECEIVERS BUT NOTHING MORE.

  13. Wendy…

Thank you VERY much!! That was exactly the kind of comment I was looking for.

Look…. we all know Richt is a good coach (or do we)? But 1-3 in Athens in unacceptable.

I would have bet the HOUSE that the Dawgs would have found a way to beat Mississippi State but it was not to be.

Even Michael Stipe has to be pissed.

I just have a feeling this is going to end badly for Coach Richt and there’s probably not too many Georgia fans that would feel bad about seeing him leave at this point.

    Am I wrong, Athens?

  14. I don’t know.

I found it unsettling that 10 players had been arrested in one year and I wrote about it. http://athenspdway.blogspot.com/

Maybe Mark is having personal problems. His wife’s cancer has been in remission for a few years. She might be sick again.

“Bo Bo needs to be fired FIRST THING Monday morning!!!! Pitiful!!!!!!!!!” says our mutual friend, Christopher Fouche, on Facebook.

Myles Little, another mutual friend, says, “Hey, I’ve got a good idea! We sneak all the Atlanta Falcons’ players in UGA uniforms for the rest of the season and see if anyone will notice.”

  15. Ath…

I swung by the blogspot and left you a word.

    Here’s the deal.

Unfortunately, we’re in the day and age of major college programs having kids that make mistakes. It happens at Florida, Georgia, USC and North Carolina among others. No school is exempt from these types of issues as long as they enroll 18-22 year old boys.

The issue of the health of Coach Richt’s wife is a different story altogether. I would imagine it very difficult for him to concentrate on anything else.

That being said, I’m sure there’s plenty of boosters that don’t give a damn. And I don’t know how much leeway Coach Richt has.

0-3 in conference play for the first time since 1993. I would have thought it was longer than that.

  16. More arrests than wins this season??

UPDATE: Georgia freshman linebacker Demetre Baker was booted off the team today after his arrest early this morning by Athens-Clarke County police on charges of DUI, improper driving and underage possession of alcohol. (Athens Banner-Herald September 26, 2010)
