Blake Griffin dunks on you… and anyone else that gets in his way (video)

For those of us who have always played basketball below the rim, we live in awe of those who permanently reside above it.  Enter Blake Griffin.

I was planning on compiling a Blake Griffin dunk montage and putting it on the site as a New Years present for you all.  Fortunately, a fellow Tweeter posted a link to this video and saved me the trouble.  Not that rummaging through YouTube for a handful of Griffilicious dunks wouldn’t be an afternoon well-spent.

After sitting out a year due to injury, the Clipper forward has come back stronger than ever, surpassing all expectations and making the power dunk fashionable again.  Sure LeBron James throws down with the best of ‘em but nobody likes him anymore, remember?

So, for those of you who have not yet witnessed firsthand the monster that is Blake Griffin, I hereby present his nastiest throw-downs of the season.

Enjoy… and look out below.

  1. For the record, people, I’d ask whether Griffin is your Rookie of the Year but that’s pretty much a foregone conclusion.

The kid is averaging 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and is shooting 52% from the floor.

  3. Good to see that he doesn’t discriminate. American, Italian, Russian, you’re all going to get dunked on.

When you’re 7’1”, and a guy is able to put his hand on your head as he’s rising up to dunk over you…it should be hard to look at yourself in the mirror later.

And lately, just because he can, he’s been throwing up threes…and naturally making them. Keep it up, and we’re going to run out of superlatives for this guy. Unreal, unbelievable, otherworldly, freak of nature, whatever you want to call it, he’s it and then some.

Jones says that he’ll line up two minority candidates as part of the interview process in order to comply with the Rooney Rule . Does anyone believe that Ray Sherman will actually be in with a chance of getting that job ? The only worthwhile minority candidate out there at this juncture is Dungy and I seriously doubt he wants to return to the NFL !

  5. Al… If Baron Davis would ever prove his worth, this team might have a shot.

Per ESPN, Griffin is only the third player since the merger (Shaq, David Robinson) to average 20 and 12 as a rookie.

Those guys’ careers turned out pretty well, I’d say.

  6. Probably even more amazing than all of that, EG, is that Griffin (Blake, not Eddie) has made the Clippers enjoyable to watch, if only for the George Gervin factor, meaning every time you see them play, you’re guaranteed at least once to go “OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!”

  7. The Cowboys will land one of the big names out there, assuming they don’t keep Garrett, Al.

And as I mentioned over on your site, Jones isn’t the first owner to fluff the Rooney Rule.

But Frazier will probably keep his job in Minnesota and Tampa Bay has one of the best young coaches in the game.

  8. kinda sad, but most of those dunks were assisted by terrible or no D (Stoudamire is a great example). I guess it’s the NBA, and I’d probably get out of his way too, but still…

Baron Davis given his mindset at times isn’t always prepared to defer to anyone . Isn’t that one of the reasons he left the Warriors amongst other things ? Not that the Warriors have been anything to write home about in recent seasons .

Jones is simply playing ‘three card Monty’ as it relates to the ‘Rooney Rule’. But what may well deter some teams from hiring a coach is the uncertainty surrounding the labor negotiations with the NFLPA . Who wants to be locked into a contract with management when they’re being paid and there’s no football. By all accounts DeMaurice Smith has asked his members to start to save at least three game checks should things go south.

The Bucs know that they’ve locked into the real deal ……. his contract (Raheem’s) is up at the end of the season so they’d better open up their pocketbook. But then again we all know how cheap the Glazers are to begin with ! They must’ve busted their balls (testes) in having to pay that $ 300 million in order to stave off bankruptcy proceedings against them concerning their soccer team Man Utd. They’re still behind on their payments to the banks who in part financed their LBO (leveraged buyout ) of the team.

And to date they’re (Glazers) still pulling the wool over the Bucs’ fans eyes . Have they even paid the monies still owed to the Tampa Bay Sports Authority ? Iorio is cutting staff and services within the city but yet they city can’t collect money they’re owed by the Bucs ? How asinine is that situation to begin with ?

That’s why the city will always be a small time player amongst the big wigs across the country . There’s no real initiative or true entrepreneurial leadership being shown by anyone in the upper echelons of the city’s government and that also at the county level as well .

    😉

Once Griffin’s rookie contract (3 yrs) is up look for him to leave the coop . The Clippers even if they ever get new ownership mightn’t want to make the necessary outlay to retain the player.

Donald Sterling is a sycophant and a jack a_s ! Why does Stern still allow this guy to own a franchise given the fact that the organization was one of the beneficiaries of his $ 250 million bailout of shared amongst a number of teams last season ?

    Donald Sterling: Right to heckle?

    By Mark Krieder ESPN

A giant tip of the cap to Donald Sterling for reminding me, with his courtside shout-outs to Baron Davis, of my essential thought about him. I love the idea of Sterling acting like a fan. This is primarily because I want so desperately for him to become one.

Unfortunately for the L.A. Clippers, Sterling continues to be an owner, and what a rancid, rancid owner he is. Two plus-.500 seasons in nearly 30 years of stewardship attest to the leaden hand with which Sterling “guides” his franchise. You can’t get this guy out of the NBA quickly enough. He is the standard for sub-mediocrity against which all other griping, losing owners will ever be judged — and that is taking in some remarkably foul territory.

Consequently, Sterling’s gutter-sniping at Davis, the underperforming, under-conditioned guard with the $65 million contract, has to be placed in the context that this is Donald T. Sterling doing the carping, and not some, you know … actual decent owner.

And that’s genuinely too bad. An owner heckling his own player during a game that his team is theoretically trying to win ought to be a more interesting story than this one.

If it wasn’t Donald T., in fact, I’d be rushing forward to give the man credit for advancing player-owner relations to the modern age, where immediate feedback is everything. Why go through the trouble of letting your Tweeps know what you think of Baron Davis when you can drop a couple of one-liners on him right there during the game?

It’s at times like this I wonder about the intelligence of Stern and the NBA hierarchy ! Is there really any intelligence there ?

NB: Over the last decade NBA franchises have borrowed in excess of $ 2 billion for a number of so called business deals and this is an enterprise that has revenues in excess of between $5- $ 6 billion globally when everything is taken into account. What indeed is wrong with that picture ?

Sorry I neglected to call you Monday. You have my number, don’t you? I want to get on this.

And don’t hate on Mr. Griffin just because he’s not a Tar Heel.

  12. Seriously, I don’t even know how to estimate what Blake Griffin’s ceiling is. I’ve never seen a guy who plays the way he does. Can you win with a guy who just decimates every single person on the other team with dunks?

  13. I think someone should sit down and do a highlight reel after every game for him. If I knew how to edit and all that stuff, I’d nominate myself for the task!

  14. He’s the most exciting player to come into the league since LeBron. I’ve never seen somebody have to duck away from the rim to prevent decapitating himself when dunking. Unbelievable.

  15. The next few years will be interesting for Grif and the Clip Joint, Pest.

If he continues to get better, i.e., more disciplined, better defensively, consistent outside jump shot, he’ll be one of the best big men in the league.

Personally, I love his demeanor. He is one cool cat as he’s dunking on your forehead.

  16. Al…

Davis was a fan favorite back when he was playing in New Orleans but Chris Paul made him an afterthought. I don’t know that Baron’s numbers have been the same ever since leaving the Big Sleazy.

Re: Morris, Al, I’d love to see him win coach of the year award. Might bump his salary up a little when signing that deal. Personally, I don’t think there’s anyway Tampa lets him get away. It’s his coaching staff he’s worried about. Can he get them paid as well?

  17. Al…

    Not so fast, my friend.

If Dolan and the Knicks can come around, cough up top dollar for Amare and still try to woo other free agents, there’s hope for Sterling yet.

If he had any sense about him, with Kobe probably done in another 3-4 years, locking up Griffin long time would be his best shot to make the Clippers the number one attraction in that town.

Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if he screwed that up as well.

  18. Griffin is a BEAST!!! As long as he stays healthy and works on his game he should be one of the most exciting players in the NBA for years to come.
