“If you leave me now, you take away the biggest part of me”
-Chicago
Ah, now this is a great sports story and yet another reason I absolutely love the NBA.
Drama.
Scorned lovers.
I’ve had a few of those in my day, women with whom I thought I’d live happily ever after (yeah, right) and now, not only do we not talk, the mere thought of them (and them of me, I’m sure) brings an uncomfortable shiver, if not an onset of nausea.
Apparently, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are having a similar type of spat.
This off-season, Ray Allen, former Celtic and still, the prettiest jump shooter in the game, decided to sign on with the Miami Heat, Boston’s current, most bitter rival. It wasn’t necessarily the whole “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em thing.” Or maybe it was. Who knows?
Either way, KG is no longer speaking to his former running mate, telling reporters “I don’t have Ray’s number anymore.” That means not only did KG go through the trouble of deleting Ray Ray from his iPhone5, he also went through the trouble of telling us all he did so.
“That’s a shame. I’m a good person to talk to on the phone… I’ve been in weird trade situations the last few years. You always felt you had one foot in and one foot out, so I can’t worry about it,” responded Allen, who obviously felt conflicted about leaving the tightly-knit Celtics but did what he thought was the right thing to do for his career.
The line of the off-season, however, goes to Dwyane Wade who had Ray’s back by saying “(Garnett) doesn’t need to be talking to our team anyway, so it’s all good.”
Look, when Carole King asked “doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore,” she was clearly talking about professional sports in general, and the NBA in particular. We all know that KG is a fiery character who still feels, as does any professional athlete, that he can beat any team, any place, at any time, even the Miami Heat. But that’s simply not the truth and Ray Ray realized it. Besides, doesn’t KG know Allen only played five years in Boston after playing five in Seattle (when they had a basketball team) and another seven in Milwaukee before that? (Damn, that’s a long career!)
Ray’s right. His name was dangled as trade-bait for much of last year. I guess he finally got tired of it.
However you feel about Ray Allen, and his decision to take his talents to South Beach, is ultimately up to you: turncoat, opportunist, or just a smart, smart man. Ray wanted another shot at a title. He felt joining the Heat was the best way for that to happen. For that, he can’t be faulted. KG’s going to have to live with it.

Ray Allen? I don’t seem to recall that name. Is he in the NBA?
Nice!
Apparently he’s no longer in Snake’s good graces either.
Hearing this makes me like Ray Allen even more (and I liked him a lot to begin with) and KG even less (not that I liked him much to begin with). Allen is right. The Celtics left him dangling in the wind much if last season, he wasn’t starting for a lot of the year and he does not get along with Rondo. Where would you rather spend your winter; Boston or South Beach? KG is just a whiny little bitch.
Big Poppa…
I wouldn’t go so far as to call KG a whiny bitch.
I get it. He’s upset.
But it’s hard to argue under the circumstances that Ray shouldn’t have gone to Miami.
This could be good.
Didn’t Snake and Frank get into it the last time I wrote something about Kevin Garnett?
Classless act by KG…no reason to toss that information out there. Grow up.
Its easy to call a big tough guy like KG a whiny bitch online, but I’m sure that Frank would shit his pants if he had to do it in person. Something I would definitely pay to see. He’s got to be from Philadelphia, home of the worst & meanest fans in the world. They even booed Santa Claus in Philly.
Sounds like someone is a bit jealous that he didn’t get an invite to the big party on south beach.I guess KG needs a new bff.
KG may not be a whiny bitch but he is certainly being childish. If not for Ray Allen, KG would not have his lone NBA championship in his overrated career. Ray Allen is a class act, one of, if not the most, liked and respected players in the NBA and he was completely done dirty by the Celtics. Lost his starting job, held out and dangled as trade bait for an entire season and he saw an opportunity to play with younger superstars in Miami instead of aging over-the-hill players in Boston. KG expected love from his teammates and fans when he bolted from the T-Wolves, just show Ray the same respect. Even if KG feels that way, to share those thoughts with the media makes him look like a petulant child.
It just shows why Ray Allen is respected by his peers and most NBA players dislike KG.
I did not intend for this post to become a bash-KG party.
Look, we know who KG is.
He’s upset.
He lost a good teammate and likely, any shot of beating the Heat come June.
He’s an emotional cat. There’s nothing wrong with that. And I’m sure there was just a little bit of drama intended as well, something KG’s been good at over the years.
I don’t think it’s either a classless or punk move. I think he’s just a guy who’s genuinely upset that Ray Allen left.
Nothing more, nothing less.
What’s up Snake! First of all, I am from New York, not Philly and judging by your comments, I think we are in agreement on Phily sports fans. Second, if KG asked my opinion, I would tell him, to his face that he is a whiny bitch. I am a 41 year old college professor so I am just the kind of person that a FAKE TOUGH GUY like KG would go after. I could always hire Ben Wallace to deliver my message. I know KG would run from him with his tail between his legs.
If he had something to say to Ray Allen, he should have done it man-to-man, not to the press at Celtics Media Day. No class.
And Aer…
I don’t think the Heat could afford to pay KG who’s a) still under contract, I believe and b) making a helluva lot more than the league min, which I think is what Ray Ray signed for.
Now Snake, I totally get why you defend KG. You seem like a typical “in the bubble” Boston sports fan. I have lived in New York, Chicago and Florida and as passionate as those fans were for their local teams, they still had some national perspective and critical thought. Boston fans are a different cat. They love their local teams but for them, there is nothing outside of Boston. There is a reason we have two strong FM sports talk radio stations and no national affiliates. No ESPN radio, no Fox Sports Radio, no Sporting News radio. It’s crazy that I live in Boston and can’t get national syndicated sports talk that I would be able to get in any city in America.
My point is that the same way Celtics fans side with KG now, they would turn on him in a second if he left the bubble. Boston fans can’t get why the Celtics are so hated nationally and why guys like KG are not liked by fans or fellow players. At least Philly fans get why everyone hates them. They are dicks and they embrace their reputations. Boston fans…they just don’t have a fucking clue.

Who’s the more viable candidate in your opinion for the AL MVP ? The Angels’ Mike Trout or Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers who’s on the verge of making baseball history ? Cabrera should become the first player since Carl Yastrzemski to notch the “Triple Crown” .
First of all, congratulations on spelling Yastrzemski’s name right. Did you know that already or did you have to look it up?
I don’t think you can wrong with either Cabrera or Trout. The talking heads are saying Trout gets the nod because of his defense but Cabrera’s resume is pretty damn impressive.
I think Ray Ray saw Mike Miller killing it in the finals and was like “are you kidding me? And they want to trade me from the Celtics?” and the decision was pretty obvious.
Chris
In terms of Yastrzemski that came about from a pub quiz we had in one of the local eateries two months ago . Seeing guys fumble around using their smart phones and whatever other devices they had , merely to spell the name correctly was comical , myself included . I knew of his background East European genealogy lineage and the fact he played for the Red Sox and his claim to fame .
Those sports’ pub quizzes though can be tough , especially on sports , that to my mind are somewhat outmoded . Is bull riding actually considered a sport ? ‘nough said !
I’d have gone with Trout perhaps say two weeks ago but Cabrera has been equally impressive if not more so in leading the Tigers to where they’re now at . AL Central divisional leaders and almost a certainty for the postseason . In the case of the Angels it was a gallant effort on their part .
KG , Pierce , and Jason Terry are part of the 53% that Romney actually cares about ,because of their annual income . Garnett should remember that when the team embarks upon their 2012-13 schedule . If Kevin Garnett , was said to be the vocal leader on the Celtics last season , then why didn’t put a stop to the idiocy when the feuding between Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo started ? It’s obvious that the relationship between the two players had deteriorated to such an extent, that it affected the team’s play over the course of the season , and then some .
.
Doc Rivers and GM Danny Ainge tried to gloss over it all , while the players themselves continued to act like kindergarten kids fighting in a sandbox over a damn toy !
That display from Romo and Dez Bryant last night ? Was that a new comedy ” double act” that comes courtesy of the Cowboys ? I just need to know , so I can set my DVR for their next performance !
Tophatal ………………
Pest…
Miller had a sick Game Five. I’ve been following him ever since his Florida days so it was good to see him finally land a ring.
Yeah, Al, I was actually thinking about that after I responded to you.
Since when has defense ever entered the equation for Major League Baseball’s season MVP? If Cabrera takes the Triple Crown, which it’s looking more and more likely that he will, I don’t see how you can’t give it to him. I mean, he essentially accomplished a feat in baseball that’s stood for longer than I’ve been alive.
And yes, the Cowboys appear to be in a lot of trouble. Jerry Jones is one unhappy camper this morning.
It’s funny how a Facebook move could lead to Ray Allen. So much talk has been raised about this, but we don’t buy into it. These two can’t take their hands off each other. hehe
I’m sure when it’s all said and done, BS, these two will be just fine…
Unless KG’s upset that Ray Ray ends up with one more ring than he does… or two.
In any other season Trout would be a unanimous winner of the AL MVP . Were it not for Cabrera’s impressive run over the past two months , I doubt that he would have been a factor in the voting !
Are the reporters in the Tampa Bay area really that anally retentive ? The Rays miss the playoffs and all those idiots can concentrate on is the issue of a new stadium for the franchise . They seem to forget that the ownership doesn’t have the money to pay to break a lease that doesn’t expire for another 15 years . Furthermore they fail to address the overall issue of the financing . Typical of what you’d come to expect from a city with the thoughts of grandeur that simply doesn’t deal in reality . Tampa is financially a mess and the same applies to St Petersburg . Never mind the fact that it’s been years since Sternberg actually opened up his own pocket book to pay for anything .
I don’t mean defense in the Verlander sense. I mean fielding. Fielding is rarely factored into the equation when determining your MVP. Otherwise, Jose Canseco wouldn’t have an MVP Trophy on his mantle. And it’s not like Barry Bonds had the greatest arm in the world. Just ask Sid Bream.
The Rays had another incredible season. Their run differential is actually higher than you’d think. Their problem is they won games 11-2 and lost too many 1-0.
Ray Allen? I don’t seem to recall that name. Is he in the NBA?

KG needs to shut the hell up, and worry more the aging cast of carpet baggers on the Celtics’ roster .
Guys, guys, guys…
I did not intend for this post to become a bash-KG party.
