The Week 5 Lines to Watch

Betting on sports is a complicated business, especially when it comes to the NFL. The smallest occurrences can have a drastic impact on betting odds, which is why it is essential that care is applied when one is scrutinizing NFL lines.

The NFL lines for Week 5 raise a lot of questions, especially if you know what to look for. And it has been suggested that some of them might move, so don’t rush into anything just yet.

The one game that you can bet on is Buffalo at Cincinnati which stands at -3. You probably think you’re dreaming here. After all, the idea of Buffalo being in first place in the AFC sounds ridiculous.

It isn’t impossible. In fact, it has happened before. But that was a very long time ago, and the Bills have only gotten worse since then. New England is the one to blame for this occurrence.

They’ve been having defensive issues and it doesn’t look like they will resolve them anytime soon. That works just fine for the Bills who are taking full advantage of the opening. As happy as the Bills are right now, it is their fans that you have to cheer for. Considering how long they have stuck with the Bills, they definitely deserve this moment of hope, however temporary it might be.

And you know the Bills are going to experience a slump down the line. But for now, one cannot help but wonder at the fact that they have only given up fourteen points per game since the season began, the lowest number of points in the league so far.

The Bills are set to make things very interesting in the division.

The Green Bay at Dallas (-2.5) game is a little more uncertain. In fact, it would make sense to wait a bit on this game. The line started at -1 before moving to -2.5. Dallas is desperate. A 2-2 record isn’t abysmal but it isn’t great either. The Cowboys have a lot they need to figure out.

The loss to the Rams was unexpected. When the schedule for the season was first released, the Cowboys were expected to roll over the Rams. However, nothing of the sort happened.

And now Dallas has a lot to prove; they need to win their next four games if they are to gain momentum. Green Bay won’t be an easy opponent but they are also not impossible to beat.

Even though Green Bay should be celebrating their win over the Bears last Thursday, they encountered a lot of injuries. So do not be so quick to throw your hat into the ring for Green Bay, at least not until you look at their injury report.

One game that is getting almost as much attention as Green Bay/Dallas is Carolina at Detroit which stands at 43.5. The Carolina Panthers did exceedingly well against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

On the one hand, it could be argued that the Panthers’ QB is that good. On the other hand, New England’s defense was nothing to write home about, so maybe Carolina had a bit of an advantage.

Detroit doesn’t have the best defense. If the Panthers can get past New England, they can probably push past Detroit. This game is worth watching because it might give Carolina a chance to put more points on the board.

  1. Anna,

I wasted 2 minutes of my life reading that ESPN summation and unfortunately will never get it back. I’d be more inclined to read your future stuff if it included Australian Rules Football.
