Snowboarding Gear for Beginners: 10 Things You Must Have

Are you planning on going on a snowboarding trip this winter? It can be an exciting, adrenaline-pumping adventure. Before you can get started, there are a few things that you’ll need.

You can rent a snowboard, bindings, and snowboard boots from the resort but that’s about all you can rent. The rest of it will have to be gathered by you.

Your snowboarding gear for beginners checklist should include safety gear, warm clothes, a bag to hold your gear, and meds for altitude sickness. Keep reading to learn how all of these things will play into you having a successful trip.

1. Snowboard

You can’t hit the slopes without Capita Snowboards to hit the slopes with. If you snowboard often then it’s a good idea to buy your own but for your first trip, renting from the resort is fine. There are different ones that you have to choose from.

As a beginner, it’s recommended that you start with a freestyle board. They’re smaller and easier to control than alpine and freeride boards.

2. Snowboard Boots

You can get snowboard boots along with your snowboard and bindings when you get to the resort. That doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea, however.

The last thing you want is to slip out of your boots when you’re on the trail. They need to conform to your specific foot size so it’s better to buy your own prior to your trip. Keep in mind that they should fit tight against your feet but they shouldn’t cut off your circulation.

3. Socks

You have to make socks a part of your snowboarding gear list. Without them, it won’t take long for your feet to get wet and cold. As soon as that happens, it’s back to the lodge for you.

You don’t want to spend an entire day with frozen feet. The snowboarding boots are bulky enough to make your feet sweat so you need a pair of socks that repel moisture.

Make sure that the material is fairly thin because your boots will be a bit hot. Socks that are breathable and waterproof are a plus. You should also spring for a pair that are tall. If you don’t your boots will rub against your skin and cause serious irritation.

4. Helmet

When it comes to any sport you need something to protect your head. Accidents are bound to happen if you’re a professional, let alone if you’re a beginner. So, add a helmet to your list of snowboarding essentials.

This way, you have something to secure your head in the event that you lose control over your board and fall. The resort may have one that you can borrow but it’s better to be safe than sorry and bring your own.

5. Jacket and Pants

Whooshing through the chilly air can get, well cold. You need a jacket that’s wind-resistant and waterproof. It should be breathable and wick your sweat away so you can stay nice and warm.

The same can be said about the pants you wear on the slopes. They need to be waterproof so if you fall in the snow they don’t allow the cold water to seep through.

6. Clothing Layers

Your jacket and pants aren’t enough to protect you from the cold. Add a few base layers under them for a little extra warmth. Make sure that the layers you choose aren’t composed of cotton-based clothes.

Cotton isn’t exactly waterproof and it doesn’t breathe. Instead, spring for wool and synthetics. They wick away moisture from sweat and will keep you nice and warm.

7. Gloves

Your hands are going to be exposed to the cold more so than any other body part. To this end, you should spring for a pair of gloves that are specially made for winter-time sports. The activity-specific gloves will keep your hands warm but won’t allow them to overheat at all.

The pair that you get also need to be durable. If you love your first time on the slopes, chances are you’ll go back a few times a year. Your gloves should be ready to take that kind of punishment.

8. Goggles

A fun, adrenaline-pumping adventure can turn sour fast when the snow picks up and splashes into your eyes. That’s why you shouldn’t hit the slopes without a sturdy pair of snow goggles.

Tinted goggles can protect you from the sun’s glare, they keep the wind from irritating your eyes, and they can shield you from debris.

9. Snowboard Bag

As you can see, snowboarding calls for a lot of equipment. It can be hard to tote it all around without a specialized bag to hold it. Depending on how many snowboarding trips you plan to go on, you should make sure the one you get is durable.

The last thing you want is for the strap to break. Speaking of holding things, you should also consider picking up a neck wallet for your trip. Having one will allow you to carry your phone, money, and passport under your clothes while you’re snowboarding.

10. Medicine for Altitude Sickness

Snowboarding at high altitudes can be fun or a horrible nauseous-filled nightmare. Since this is your first time going and you have no idea how the altitude is going to affect you, we recommend that you bring along a bottle of medicine for altitude sickness.
